Wulong

I went back to Wulong in 2025, about ten years after my first visit, and the karst landscape and Longshuixia Fissure Gorge still left me in awe. Some places hold up very well to a return trip. I’d give this a full day from Chongqing, with plenty of room for the walking and the drive. If doing both major sites at a gentler pace matters, an overnight is the useful addition.

Before you go

  • Set up Alipay before departure: register your mobile number, add an eligible overseas card under Me → Bank Cards and follow identity-verification prompts. Keep access to SMS codes.
  • WeChat Pay is the alternative: Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards. Foreign-card support depends on the issuer; check the final payment screen for fees, especially above RMB 200.
  • Keep RMB cash in smaller notes and a second card. Most people pay by QR code. Foreign cards work at bigger hotels and shops, but rarely at food stalls. Ask before ordering if you need to pay by card.
  • In metro cities, activate the local transport QR service separately from the shopping payment code, or buy a station ticket. For road journeys, use DiDi with the exact pickup point and destination saved.
  • Save hotel and attraction names in Chinese, plus offline screenshots. A translation app helps with menus; ‘xièxie’ means thank you and ‘zhège’ means this one.
  • Install a compatible China eSIM or arrange a local SIM before relying on data. Check coverage and whether the plan includes a local number; keep your home SIM available for verification messages.

  1. Early departure · Confirm the whole transport chain

    Start with the transfer from your Chongqing base, allowing for any collection points before the main journey. Ask where the vehicle stops, which site is first and how you reconnect after walking. A tour duration is not the same as time in the scenery. Keep food, water and good shoes with you, not packed away in your luggage.   2. Main visit · Let Three Natural Bridges take its time

    Wulong’s natural bridges show how water can cut through limestone to leave immense arches and enclosed valleys. Stop underneath them and take in the size. Don’t just walk towards the next sign.

    If this is the chosen site, confirm the entrance, shuttle arrangements and where the vehicle meets you after the walking route. Steps, queues and one-way sections all add time beyond the distance on the map. Take your time on the main visit and take photos along the way. You won’t always get an empty shot. An operator’s total excursion length includes the road journey; it is not all time beneath the bridges.

  3. After lunch · Decide whether the gorge still fits

    Longshuixia is a possible second visit, but check its separate ticket and transfer arrangements before booking a combined day. Pause for lunch and reassess the remaining walking and return time. If the first site takes longer, cut something else. Don’t rush the gorge to make a dinner booking in the city. An overnight stay is the useful extension when you want both landscapes with less pressure.

    Longshuixia offers a narrower gorge experience than the broad spaces beneath the bridges. Only add it for the contrast if the steps and your energy allow.

  4. Return · Leave the evening unbooked

    Allow for the journey back and any local transfer to your accommodation. A late meal nearby is more realistic than a tightly timed river cruise afterwards. Poor weather or access restrictions can alter the day's value significantly, so check current site and operator advice. If walking conditions aren’t good, postpone or do something else. The plan isn’t set in stone.

What to budget

Budget RMB 30–80 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.

A few photo tips

  • Use a wide frame from the marked route to include the bridge opening and a little valley floor for scale.
  • Soft light is often easier inside the gorge than harsh sun above it; keep the camera dry and the stairway clear.

If the weather changes

Skip slippery gorge routes or closed attractions and keep a local indoor meal or return to the city; do not treat another exposed valley as a rain substitute.

The final day and your flight

Morning flight: stay within reach of Chongqing Jiangbei Airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.

Afternoon flight: allow the complete Wulong-to-airport transfer; the bridge walk should be on a separate day from a tight flight connection. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.

Where to pause for food

Arrange lunch between the scenic visits and carry water. Leave dinner back in Chongqing flexible.

Getting around

Organise the outward transfer, movement between attractions and return as one full excursion. Give the return journey a firm place in the schedule.

Sort out mobile data before arriving: compare Airalo eSIM plans, checking your phone’s compatibility, the plan’s coverage and access to the apps you need. Keep hotel addresses and key bookings saved offline as well.

Where to stay

A return day from Chongqing suits someone comfortable with a long outing and substantial transport. For a slower visit to both sites, compare an overnight near the actual sightseeing area and ask how the property connects to entrances and departure transport. A broad Wulong address is not enough to judge convenience. Pick the overnight stay around the walking, with dinner and the next leg sorted before you leave the city.

For a shorter day or different weather

Choose one site if the transfers and walking leave too little time for both. The bridges and Longshuixia offer different settings, so ask about each route's steps and transport before deciding. An overnight nearby makes the two-site version less rushed.
