Chongqing gave my legs a workout. Between the stairs, the changes of level and the river views, even a short walk could turn into an outing. The city lights and hotpot are what I remember most. My notes had four nights at Somerset Yangtze River Chongqing, keeping the same base for a full-day trip to Wulong. That’s how I’d do it again.
Before you go
- Set up Alipay before departure: register your mobile number, add an eligible overseas card under Me → Bank Cards and follow identity-verification prompts. Keep access to SMS codes.
- WeChat Pay is the alternative: Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards. Foreign-card support depends on the issuer; check the final payment screen for fees, especially above RMB 200.
- Keep RMB cash in smaller notes and a second card. Most people pay by QR code. Foreign cards work at bigger hotels and shops, but rarely at food stalls. Ask before ordering if you need to pay by card.
- In metro cities, activate the local transport QR service separately from the shopping payment code, or buy a station ticket. For road journeys, use DiDi with the exact pickup point and destination saved.
- Save hotel and attraction names in Chinese, plus offline screenshots. A translation app helps with menus; ‘xièxie’ means thank you and ‘zhège’ means this one.
- Install a compatible China eSIM or arrange a local SIM before relying on data. Check coverage and whether the plan includes a local number; keep your home SIM available for verification messages.

Arrival · Keep the first night local
A late arrival is a transfer and check-in day, even when the calendar labels it day one. Settle in, find an open meal option nearby if needed and leave the first substantial outing until morning. Four nights don’t automatically provide five full sightseeing days; the onward rail journey also needs a protected departure window.
First full day · Jiefangbei towards the water
Start in Jiefangbei and head to the riverfront. Leave time to find the right level and entrance, because it’s not a flat walk. Hongyadong fits later in this same outing. Stop indoors for lunch or a drink before the evening crowds, and choose a convenient place for dinner. A second cross-city viewpoint is optional; it may add more travelling than a new perspective.
Jiefangbei’s central monument stands amid one of Chongqing’s busiest commercial districts, making the mix of older civic history and modern towers easy to see. Use this first walk to get used to how up-and-down the city is.
Hongyadong’s modern riverside complex draws on the region’s stilt-house forms; its stacked terraces make the hillside visible in the architecture. The view across the water is as good as the lanes inside.

Another city day · Ciqikou or a focused Liziba stop
Give Ciqikou a substantial neighbourhood window if you want streets and time to browse. Liziba is a different, more focused stop centred on the transport setting. Check the journey from your base before deciding to combine them. Keeping part of the day unbooked also lets you return to the riverfront if rain shortened the first outing. Don’t borrow time from Wulong’s return journey to make another city booking work.
Ciqikou grew around river trade, and its old-town lanes offer a smaller-scale contrast to central Chongqing. Go past the first busy food street. Look for doorways, steps and somewhere to sit.
Liziba is a working rail station integrated into a building, a compact example of how Chongqing fits transport into steep, dense terrain. Keep it short and watch the train with the city around it.
Wulong’s limestone bridges and gorges show the work of water on a very different scale from the city’s engineered crossings. Keep the whole day free for the landscape. Don’t rush back for another booking.

Keep the karst excursion free of city bookings. Confirm the exact sites, vehicle arrangements and amount of walking with the operator or transport provider. The journey and internal connections are a substantial part of the day. Return for an uncomplicated evening near the hotel, not a reservation that depends on getting back at a precise time. Three Natural Bridges and Longshuixia Fissure Gorge are separate visits, with transport and walking between the headline moments. Final city time · One extra experience, then the onward journey
Use the remaining time for a currently operating river crossing or cruise if it interests you, or return to an area you want to see more slowly. These are alternatives, not requirements. Before heading to Zhangjiajie, check the station and train on your ticket, collect your bags and get to the station early. Don’t add another far-off stop.
What to budget

Budget RMB 30–80 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- For Hongyadong, look back from the public riverside or a permitted opposite-bank viewpoint at blue hour; include some water to separate the lights from the foreground.
- At Liziba, use the designated viewing area and leave the station entrance clear. A slightly wider frame shows why the train-and-building combination is unusual.
- Cloudy light suits Ciqikou’s narrow lanes and steps. Go earlier in the day for a better chance of space, and ask before photographing people at close range.
If the weather changes
Use a museum or a long meal near the hotel when heavy rain makes the stepped streets uncomfortable. Keep Wulong for a day when the operator confirms access and conditions; a wet-weather city day is easier to rearrange than a gorge excursion.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: keep checkout and the transfer to Chongqing Jiangbei Airport as the only plan. Confirm the terminal and pickup level with the hotel.
Afternoon flight: choose breakfast and a short local walk, then collect bags. Leave room for traffic and the correct terminal; Wulong, Ciqikou and a queued river attraction belong on a full day.
Check the level as well as the address
Save the entrance or meeting point for a booking and ask which level it's on. Around the riverfront, finding the right approach can take time even when you're close on the map. Group Jiefangbei and Hongyadong, then leave Ciqikou for a separate outing.

I’d start with five days and four nights, including arrival, departure and a full day in Wulong. With only three nights, keep one full city day and decide whether Wulong gets the other. An extra night gives you a slower city day or an overnight near Wulong.

Do Wulong on a day with good weather and confirmed access, and keep city plans loose around the rain. Hongyadong works well around blue hour for the lights; in heavy rain, shorten the stepped streets and leave more time for a museum or hotpot near the hotel.
