Day 1 — arrive, check in, leave the city for tomorrow

My planner had a late arrival from Zhangjiajie into Pudong. With that sort of arrival, the useful plan is a transfer, something to eat if needed and bed. Save the Bund for a day when you can actually spend time there. If you’re staying near Disney, confirm the hotel’s transfer arrangements before arrival. A hotel described as being in the Disney area may still need a separate journey to the entrance. Have its address saved in Chinese as well as English, and check how you’ll get breakfast before heading out.

Day 2 — Disneyland gets the whole day

I went to Shanghai Disneyland, and it belongs on its own day in this route. Pick a few attractions you particularly want to do, then use the gaps for the rest. That leaves some flexibility when a queue is longer than expected. For this full park day, compare Shanghai Disneyland admission options with Disney’s own dated admission. Check you’re buying park entry, not just an add-on.

Shanghai Disneyland brings Disney’s stories into a park designed specifically for Shanghai, with the Enchanted Storybook Castle at its centre. Keep the whole day for it so there’s time to ride your favourite twice.

Plan to eat in the park and check the dining options before the day. Take a seated break before deciding how much evening you want to stay for. Check the schedule for your date. Don’t plan your trip back around a show time you haven’t confirmed.

A second night near Disney means you can return directly to your room after the park. Check the resort’s ticket and entry information before booking, including the identification you’ll need.

Day 3 — Yu Garden to the Bund, with time between them

Move to your central base and leave your bags first. Then make Yu Garden the main visit before lunch. Inside, slow down around the rockwork, courtyards and framed views through doorways. It’s a different experience from the shops outside, so don’t judge the garden by how crowded the surrounding bazaar feels.

Yu Garden began as a Ming-dynasty retreat for the Pan family, with ponds, rockeries and doorways that frame the next view. This is one place I’d give more time if I went back.

Allow roughly two to three hours for the garden, a short look around the old-city streets and a meal nearby. Allow longer if you want to spend more time inside the garden. If you want a longer sit-down lunch, take the time from shopping, not the garden.

From the old-city area, head towards the Huangpu waterfront, then follow the Bund north towards East Nanjing Road. Allow about half an hour for the connection on foot before photo stops; check your map from the garden exit you actually use. A taxi is a reasonable swap if the heat or your legs make the walk unappealing.

The Bund’s former banks and trading houses reflect Shanghai’s treaty-port past; the Pudong towers across the river show a very different chapter. Look both ways along the river. It’s more than one skyline photo.

Once you’re by the river, look both ways: across to Pudong, then back at the buildings lining the Bund. Keep the late afternoon open here. You can sit down, take photos and decide whether to stay into the evening without another admission time pulling you away.

East Nanjing Road makes a convenient way back towards the central shopping district. Browse along the way if you have the energy. Dinner near your accommodation works well after a day largely on foot.

Day 4 — choose your museum, then a smaller street walk

Shanghai Museum was part of my trip. For a visit now, choose the building for what’s on display before planning the rest of the day. The People’s Square site and the East Museum in Pudong are separate destinations.

Shanghai Museum’s collections place ceramics, bronzes and other Chinese art in a much longer story than the modern skyline suggests. Pick a few collections and look at them properly. You can’t see every room.

The museum’s current notice says the People’s Square building is devoted to a ticketed ancient American civilisations exhibition from 9 July 2026 to 14 November 2027. For the wider collection, look at the East Museum instead. Its usual Tuesday closure also matters when choosing the day. Read the official admission notice for exceptions, identification and exhibition arrangements. This museum information was checked on 18 September 2026.

Give a focused museum visit roughly two to three hours. If you choose People’s Square, have lunch before travelling to the Wukang Road and Anfu Road area for a short neighbourhood walk. Pick a few connected streets, notice the buildings and stop for a drink when you feel like it. Allow around two hours, including a café stop.

The streets around Wukang Road retain villas and apartment buildings from Shanghai’s early twentieth-century growth. Come for the scale of the streets and the building details, not just the famous corner photo.

If you choose the East Museum, keep the afternoon lighter: the journey back from Pudong is part of the day. AP Plaza was another stop on my trip, but treat shopping there as a replacement for the neighbourhood walk, subject to checking current access. Choose the shopping or the street walk after the museum.

AP Plaza offers a busy market-shopping contrast to the garden and museum. Have a browse if you like shopping, but don’t let it eat into your river time.

Day 5 — leave room for the correct airport

My route departed through Hongqiao. With a morning flight, keep Day 5 for checkout and the transfer; it is a travel day, not a missing sightseeing day. Confirm the terminal and work backwards from the airline’s required arrival time.

With an afternoon or evening flight, leave your bags at the hotel, have breakfast nearby and allow a 45–60 minute walk in the same neighbourhood. If you are staying near the Bund, this can be your quieter second look at the river; otherwise stay near your base. Have an early lunch only if it fits before the firm luggage-collection time.

Don’t add a new museum, a cross-city shopping trip or anything timed here. Save the hotel-to-terminal route the night before and keep a transport buffer; optional sightseeing is the first thing to drop if the morning runs late.

What to change for your trip

With one extra night, separate the museum from the neighbourhood walk. That also gives you another chance at the waterfront if rain cuts the first visit short. In persistent rain, switch the museum into the wetter day and save the Bund for a clearer gap, while respecting museum closures.

If Disney isn’t for you, remove that day and use one central base. Keep the garden and waterfront day as it is. That’s where I’d spend the time. For meals, the old-city district and the streets around your central base are more useful anchors than a restaurant list that sends you across town.
