Your suggested route

The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.

  1. 09:00 · Kōfuku-ji and the park

Walk from central Nara towards Kōfuku-ji, allowing an hour for the temple surroundings and orientation. Keep snacks packed away around deer. Let the park connect the cultural visits rather than making animal photographs the entire day.

  2. 10:30 · Tōdai-ji

Allow at least 90 minutes for the approach and Great Buddha Hall. Read about the building and Buddha before moving on; the scale deserves more than a quick entrance photograph. Keep the next part of the day flexible if you want longer here.

  3. 12:30 · Lunch and one afternoon highlight

Have a seated lunch, then choose Isuien for a garden visit or Kasuga Taisha for shrine architecture and a longer wooded approach. Give the selected stop about 90 minutes. Choosing one keeps the day comfortable rather than rushing to complete both.

  4. 16:00 · Naramachi

Finish with a slow walk through Naramachi and a café or small shop. Allow a buffer for the return to your station. If staying overnight, have dinner in town after the busiest day-trip period instead of immediately boarding a train.

Where to pause for food

Choose soba, udon or a set meal around the town-side approaches. An afternoon tea break in Naramachi is useful after the large temple grounds. Check current menus and opening hours rather than relying on a single small restaurant.

Getting around

Check whether you arrive at JR Nara or Kintetsu-Nara: the approaches differ. Most of the route is on foot, with local buses useful for shortening sections. Allow a full day from Kyoto or Osaka including rail transfers.

For a shorter day or different weather

For a shorter visit, keep Kōfuku-ji, Tōdai-ji and lunch. In rain, reduce the park walking and select a museum or suitable indoor venue. If mobility is limited, check individual temple approaches before choosing the longer shrine route.

Before you go

Confirm garden and temple opening days. Feed deer only as permitted, use approved food if choosing to feed them, and keep possessions secure. Wear shoes comfortable for paved and gravel approaches; close animal interaction is optional.
