My Sanya memory is the coast and that bring-on-summer feeling. I’d stick to one bay, enjoy the hotel and add a separate Nanshan day if it interested me.

Before you go

  • Set up Alipay before departure: register your mobile number, add an eligible overseas card under Me → Bank Cards and follow identity-verification prompts. Keep access to SMS codes.
  • WeChat Pay is the alternative: Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards. Foreign-card support depends on the issuer; check the final payment screen for fees, especially above RMB 200.
  • Keep RMB cash in smaller notes and a second card. Most people pay by QR code. Foreign cards work at bigger hotels and shops, but rarely at food stalls. Ask before ordering if you need to pay by card.
  • In metro cities, activate the local transport QR service separately from the shopping payment code, or buy a station ticket. For road journeys, use DiDi with the exact pickup point and destination saved.
  • Save hotel and attraction names in Chinese, plus offline screenshots. A translation app helps with menus; ‘xièxie’ means thank you and ‘zhège’ means this one.
  • Install a compatible China eSIM or arrange a local SIM before relying on data. Check coverage and whether the plan includes a local number; keep your home SIM available for verification messages.

A route for your visit

Times are rough. Allow extra time for getting there, leaving and transfers.

  1. Day 1 · Settle into one bay

    Choose accommodation according to the coast you want to spend time on and the transfer it requires. Yalong Bay is one option if a beach-focused stay suits you. After arrival, leave luggage and take a short local walk. A late flight should mean dinner and rest, not an attempt to recover a full beach day.

    Yalong Bay’s long beach gives this itinerary its resort rhythm, with time by the water as important as any excursion. Leave part of the day completely free.

  2. Day 1 · Keep the evening nearby

    Stay near the accommodation for dinner and a little waterfront time if conditions suit. Look at a couple of menus nearby. Don’t book somewhere far away before you know how arrival day will go. Check local swimming advice and conditions. Not every stretch of coast is safe, and that’s a separate call from the shore walk. The benefit of a coastal base is being able to spend time there without arranging another long ride every time you leave the room.

  3. Day 2 · Nanshan gets the day’s main window

    Check current access and arrange both directions from your actual bay before leaving. Allow several hours on site plus the road journeys, with a meal and a rest along the way. Follow visitor guidance in the religious areas. Spend the evening near your accommodation. Another big attraction would turn this into a day of transfers.     Nanshan combines a Buddhist cultural setting with a prominent coastal Guanyin monument. Visit respectfully and take time in the grounds. Don’t just go for the distant statue photo.

  4. Day 3 · Stay close before the airport

    Use any spare morning for the nearby shore, then return for checkout or luggage. Follow local advice on swimming. Not every beach is safe. An island outing such as Wuzhizhou needs its own ferry and transport arrangements: add a night or replace Nanshan if that is the priority. It isn’t a dependable last stop before a flight.

    Wuzhizhou adds an offshore island setting to the mainland beach stay. Only do it if the ferry and a full free day make it worth the trip.

What to budget

Prices checked September 2026. These are for the named ticket or service. Check your date and what’s included before you pay.

  • Nanshan adult admission: RMB 108–129 — 108 May–September; 129 October–April according to the attraction’s published schedule. Internal transport and other extras are separate. Price source

Budget RMB 30–80 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.

A few photo tips

  • Use the public or hotel-permitted beach in softer morning or late light, keeping swimmers’ privacy in mind.
  • At Nanshan, photograph from designated areas and include the coastal setting; keep religious and restricted interiors off the camera list.

If the weather changes

Use the accommodation or an indoor city visit and postpone island ferries if conditions are poor; a beach day should not depend on forcing an excursion.

The final day and your flight

Morning flight: stay within reach of Sanya Phoenix Airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.

Afternoon flight: stay near your base for breakfast and perhaps a short beach walk; leave Wuzhizhou and Nanshan for earlier days. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.

Where to pause for food

First Market Night Market is the named town-food option, with the price and preparation agreed before buying seafood. Pair it with a stay around Dadonghai. Don’t make a long round trip from Haitang Bay just for dinner. Nanshan remains a separate excursion; a beach morning, that temple visit and a town meal need their own travel time.

Getting around

Use arranged cars or taxis for the Nanshan outing and airport transfer. Confirm your hotel’s exact bay, not just ‘Sanya’. A rental car is not essential for this deliberately limited route, especially if you prefer to stay near the beach.

Sort out mobile data before arriving: compare Airalo eSIM plans, checking your phone’s compatibility, the plan’s coverage and access to the apps you need. Keep hotel addresses and key bookings saved offline as well.

Where to stay

Stay in one bay for the two nights and choose the room around the kind of holiday you actually want: easy beach access, meals at the property or nearby, and a manageable airport journey. Ask about the exact location and swimming. “Beachfront” can mean a lot of things. If Nanshan is the main outing, compare that transfer too. Changing hotels on a short stay eats into beach time.

For a shorter day or different weather

An island excursion can replace Nanshan, or each can have its own day with another night. In unsettled weather, use the accommodation and a suitable indoor outing. I’d keep the same bay as a base so the rest of the stay still feels like a beach holiday.

Booking checks

Check beach conditions, activity operation and Nanshan access. Confirm which hotel facilities and beach services are included for guests. Not every nice-looking shoreline is safe for swimming or open to the public through a private resort.
