Sun-kissed skin and beach hair had me very happy on Samui. It’s a place to leave some space in the day, not tick off five beaches before dinner.

Before you go

  • Carry baht in smaller notes for markets, temples and local transport. Cards work best at hotels and bigger businesses. Watch for surcharges.
  • A Thai QR sign doesn’t mean your foreign banking app can pay. Keep some cash unless your own wallet app confirms it works.
  • Bangkok’s rail operators have separate ticketing arrangements. Outside the capital there’s usually no metro, so sort out local transport ahead.
  • Grab works in the cities. Islands, parks and rural pickups usually need a driver booked ahead. Confirm the return journey and waiting time.
  • Save addresses in Thai and use an offline translation app. ‘Sawasdee khrap’ is a polite hello for a male speaker; ‘khop khun khrap’ is thank you.
  • Buy a registered local SIM or compatible eSIM with the coverage you need. Have your passport available for registration and keep a screenshot of the accommodation address.

A route for your visit

Times are rough. Allow extra time for getting there, leaving and transfers.

  1. Day 1 · Wat Phra Yai first

    Start at Wat Phra Yai, the Big Buddha stop, and add nearby Wat Plai Laem only if you want a second temple setting. Then continue to Choeng Mon for the beach part of the day. Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village is the evening choice, so there is no need to cross the island repeatedly between meals.

    Wat Phra Yai’s large seated Buddha is a religious landmark as well as a recognisable island view. Give the temple a proper, respectful visit. It’s more than the photo on the steps.

    Choeng Mon’s bay gives the day a beach setting without needing to cross the whole island. Lunch and a bit of time by the water is enough.

    Bophut’s waterfront streets bring shops and restaurants into an older coastal settlement. Walk a short stretch before picking dinner. The evening doesn’t have to be all market stalls.

  2. Choeng Mon for lunch and the afternoon

    After the temple visit, move to Choeng Mon for lunch and time near the coast. Stay in this part of the island. Driving between beach clubs gets old fast. A shaded meal and a walk can be the whole afternoon; swimming is a separate choice based on conditions. Leave enough time to get changed before travelling to Bophut for dinner.

  3. Day 1 · Bophut for the evening

    Travel to Fisherman’s Village for a waterfront walk and dinner. Check the market’s actual operating day if stalls are the reason for going. Book your ride back before settling in for the evening, and pick a restaurant by its current menu, not just a photo.

  4. A local day, or Ang Thong

    Keep the second day near your accommodation if you want more beach time. If Ang Thong is a priority, replace the whole day with a properly arranged excursion after checking current park access and marine conditions. A cooking class is another distinct alternative. Pick one tour and keep its transfers in mind. Don’t add a cross-island loop afterwards. For that full-day option, browse Ang Thong boat trips on Klook and check pickup from your part of Samui.

    Ang Thong’s clustered limestone islands give a different scale of seascape from Samui’s beaches. Only do it if you have a full free day and the sea is calm.

What to budget

Prices checked September 2026. These are for the named ticket or service. Check your date and what’s included before you pay.

Budget THB 80–250 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.

A few photo tips

  • At Choeng Mon, use the bay curve in morning or late light from a safe public beach position.
  • At Bophut, blue hour can balance waterfront lights and sky; ask before close portraits of vendors.

If the weather changes

Have a local indoor lunch or a spa visit and a short sheltered outing. Move Ang Thong to another day. Don’t force a boat trip in bad conditions.

The final day and your flight

Morning flight: stay within reach of Samui Airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.

Afternoon flight: a nearby breakfast or short beach look may fit, but leave Ang Thong and cross-island touring for another day. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.

Where to pause for food

Use Choeng Mon for a relaxed lunch and Bophut for a dinner with several menu choices nearby. Ask seafood prices before ordering by weight. On day two, have one long meal. Don’t hop between far-apart beach clubs just for photos.

Getting around

Use arranged taxis or a driver for the northeast temple-and-coast route. Agree the fare or use a clear booking method. You don’t need a scooter. Think about the roads, your licence and how much riding you’ve done before deciding.

Where to stay

Pick a base by the kind of evenings you want and the trips on this route. Choeng Mon suits the relaxed coastal portion; Bophut makes dinner and browsing easier. Check the actual location. Not every place described as “Samui” is close to both. For two days, keep one accommodation and use arranged transfers where needed. For a shorter day or different weather

For two days, group the north and northeast stops and keep a beach afternoon free. Ang Thong is a full marine-excursion day, replacing other plans. If your base is farther south or west, combine the northern sights into one road outing.

Booking checks

Check temple access, Bophut market days and activity inclusions. Confirm sea conditions and park operation before an Ang Thong booking. Check the weather for your dates. Samui’s seasons aren’t the same as Phuket’s.
