Phuket: elephants and Old Town

Meeting the elephants was a comforting part of my Phuket trip, especially hearing about animals that had been rescued from abuse. One was called Beautiful Flower in Thai, which was very sweet.

Before you go
- Carry baht in smaller notes for markets, temples and local transport. Cards work best at hotels and bigger businesses. Watch for surcharges.
- A Thai QR sign doesn’t mean your foreign banking app can pay. Keep some cash unless your own wallet app confirms it works.
- Bangkok’s rail operators have separate ticketing arrangements. Outside the capital there’s usually no metro, so sort out local transport ahead.
- Grab works in the cities. Islands, parks and rural pickups usually need a driver booked ahead. Confirm the return journey and waiting time.
- Save addresses in Thai and use an offline translation app. ‘Sawasdee khrap’ is a polite hello for a male speaker; ‘khop khun khrap’ is thank you.
- Buy a registered local SIM or compatible eSIM with the coverage you need. Have your passport available for registration and keep a screenshot of the accommodation address.

A route for your visit
Times are rough. Allow extra time for getting there, leaving and transfers.
Choose the actual programme
The sanctuary currently lists a ninety-minute canopy visit and a three-and-a-half-hour half-day programme. Choose based on the time you want to spend observing and learning, then include transfers in the total. Its current model is observation-only. Check the exact venue name and programme before booking. Places with similar names don’t offer the same thing.
The sanctuary’s observation-focused visit makes room for elephants to move and interact on their own terms. Come to watch them be elephants, not for a posed photo.
Let the elephant visit fill its own window
Allow the full programme plus transfers and follow the guide’s instructions. Watch the animals moving without asking for riding, performances or bathing contact. Use lunch if included; otherwise arrange a meal afterwards before considering another cross-island journey.
Give the programme your attention once you're there. Listen to each elephant’s story, watch how they move and interact, and take photos without trying to set anything up. Let the guide set the pace and distance. If lunch is included, use that as the natural break afterwards. If it isn't, have a nearby or return-route meal planned so the visit isn't followed by a hungry search in the car.
Old Town if it fits the return route
If the sanctuary transfer leaves time for Old Town, choose Phuket Thai Hua Museum or Chinpracha House for an interior visit. Thalang Road and Soi Romanee give the walk a compact focus afterwards. Those stops belong to the Old Town part of the day; don’t add a cross-island temple or viewpoint before dinner.
Phuket Old Town’s shophouses reflect the island’s trading and tin-mining past, with different cultural influences visible along the streets. Look above the shopfronts, and stop for something to eat.
Dinner near your base
Stay in Old Town for dinner if it fits your accommodation and return journey. Otherwise, head back after the visit and eat nearby. Leave Old Town for another day if the programme and transfers already fill the time you have.
If Old Town is convenient, stay for a Phuket-style meal or Hokkien noodles and make that the evening. If the accommodation is elsewhere, return there and eat locally. Decide based on the actual drive. Don’t try to link every Phuket highlight in one day. An early finish can be useful, particularly if the next day starts with a boat pickup.
What to budget

Budget THB 80–250 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- Use a longer lens from the viewing areas and let the elephants choose how close they come.
- In Old Town, softer early or late light suits façades; stand on the pavement and keep entrances clear.
If the weather changes
Confirm the sanctuary’s rain arrangements; shorten Old Town to a café and a sheltered street loop. For a cancelled programme, choose a town museum if open.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: stay within reach of Phuket Airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.
Afternoon flight: only use a short programme if the operator confirms a return with ample airport margin; Old Town traffic and bag collection also need time. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.
