Phi Phi: an island overnight stay

The limestone cliffs from the water are what bring Phi Phi back to me. If I went now, I’d stay overnight on Phi Phi Don, settle in and give the boat trip its own time.

Before you go
- Carry baht in smaller notes for markets, temples and local transport. Cards work best at hotels and bigger businesses. Watch for surcharges.
- A Thai QR sign doesn’t mean your foreign banking app can pay. Keep some cash unless your own wallet app confirms it works.
- Bangkok’s rail operators have separate ticketing arrangements. Outside the capital there’s usually no metro, so sort out local transport ahead.
- Grab works in the cities. Islands, parks and rural pickups usually need a driver booked ahead. Confirm the return journey and waiting time.
- Save addresses in Thai and use an offline translation app. ‘Sawasdee khrap’ is a polite hello for a male speaker; ‘khop khun khrap’ is thank you.
- Buy a registered local SIM or compatible eSIM with the coverage you need. Have your passport available for registration and keep a screenshot of the accommodation address.

A route for your visit
Times are rough. Allow extra time for getting there, leaving and transfers.
Day 1 · Land on Phi Phi Don and settle
Confirm the arrival pier and how the property expects you to reach it, especially if it requires another boat. Drop your bags, have lunch and walk the waterfront before doing anything big. Use the afternoon to confirm tomorrow's excursion, return window and onward ticket together. This avoids discovering after booking that the boat trip returns too late for the ferry you already planned to catch.
A viewpoint or a beach afternoon
Tonsai is the practical arrival and meal base; Loh Dalum gives you a nearby beach-side setting if you want a short first afternoon. The Phi Phi viewpoint is the stepped walk for a day when you have energy after the ferry. Maya Bay belongs to the separately booked boat route, with current access confirmed by the operator.
Maya Bay’s enclosed limestone setting explains its appeal, while access restrictions reflect the pressure on the marine environment. Treat the visit as a chance to look. Swimming and landings aren’t always allowed.
Day 2 · A boat outing around current access
Choose a properly equipped operator and confirm which stops are open and permitted. Maya Bay has conservation restrictions and seasonal closures, so check its status before booking. Follow the crew's instructions for snorkelling, swimming and shore access at each stop.
Read the proposed boat stops individually and ask how long you get at each. I’d pick a route with time to enjoy the scenery and any water activities over one that promises every famous bay. Maya Bay access is date-dependent, and an old photograph isn't a current permission to swim or land. Bring a dry change of clothes, protect your phone and follow the crew’s briefing at each stop.

Phi Phi Don’s narrow settled area sits between bays, which makes the island’s geography easy to read from an authorised viewpoint. Look at the shape of the coast, not just the portrait at the top.
Let the onward boat decide what fits
Confirm the excursion’s actual return and leave time to eat, collect luggage and check in for your onward boat. If the tour takes all day, add a night or skip it. Don’t count on getting back early. Keep a mainland overnight buffer before an important flight where possible. Weather-sensitive boats make a poor same-day link to an international departure.

Budget THB 80–250 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- Use the signed viewpoint in cooler light, allowing time to descend before dark; stay behind any barriers.
- On the boat trip, use a stable seated position for limestone layers and keep the camera protected during boarding.
If the weather changes
If boats are cancelled, remain near the accommodation and rearrange the onward transfer. Do not replace a cancelled excursion with a smaller unapproved boat.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: stay within reach of the mainland near your Phuket or Krabi airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.
Afternoon flight: return from the island with a generous buffer, preferably the day before; a morning boat excursion is not a reliable pre-flight plan. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.
Booking checks
Confirm current marine-park access, seasonal closures, landing rules, fees and cancellation terms before booking. A named bay on an operator itinerary doesn’t guarantee access on your date. Swimming is not permitted at every stop.
