Leshan

The Giant Buddha is the reason for the day. Decide how you want to see it before booking transport: from land, from the river, or both. This suggested route leaves room for lunch and the journey back to Chengdu. It fits into a longer Sichuan trip. Give Mount Emei its own day rather than squeezing it in after.

Before you go

  • Set up Alipay before departure: register your mobile number, add an eligible overseas card under Me → Bank Cards and follow identity-verification prompts. Keep access to SMS codes.
  • WeChat Pay is the alternative: Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards. Foreign-card support depends on the issuer; check the final payment screen for fees, especially above RMB 200.
  • Keep RMB cash in smaller notes and a second card. Most people pay by QR code. Foreign cards work at bigger hotels and shops, but rarely at food stalls. Ask before ordering if you need to pay by card.
  • In metro cities, activate the local transport QR service separately from the shopping payment code, or buy a station ticket. For road journeys, use DiDi with the exact pickup point and destination saved.
  • Save hotel and attraction names in Chinese, plus offline screenshots. A translation app helps with menus; ‘xièxie’ means thank you and ‘zhège’ means this one.
  • Install a compatible China eSIM or arrange a local SIM before relying on data. Check coverage and whether the plan includes a local number; keep your home SIM available for verification messages.

A route for your visit

Times are rough. Allow extra time for getting there, leaving and transfers.

  1. Morning · Reach the site, not just the station

    If travelling by rail, include the local connection after arrival in Leshan. Check the destination station and the attraction entrance or boat departure point before setting off. Keep the return service realistic and avoid booking it around an optimistic minimum visit. Breakfast before the main outing makes the transfer sequence simpler.

    A river boat gives a different view of the Buddha’s position in the cliff from the land route. Do it for the view from the water. River conditions decide whether it runs.

  2. At the site · Choose the perspective you came for

    A land ticket involves its own walking route and possible queues; particular stair sections may have changing access. The river boat has separate operating conditions and does not automatically include entry on land. Check both before deciding, especially if steep steps are a concern. Allow a few hours for the main visit as a planning estimate and avoid booking the return train around the shortest advertised duration. You can browse Leshan Giant Buddha options on Klook, but check whether you’re booking a boat view, a walking visit or both.

    The Leshan Giant Buddha was carved into the riverside cliff during the Tang dynasty, making the river setting part of its story. Take time to take in the size of it. Don’t judge the visit on whether you reached the lowest viewpoint.

  3. Lunch after the main visit

    Eat near the site or on the way towards your return transport. Keep the choice flexible if queues have used more time than expected. A short local walk can follow if there's room before you need to head to the station.

    After the main visit, find somewhere to sit for lunch and give yourself a proper break. Pick a flexible restaurant near your next stop. Don’t book a table around an optimistic finish time. If doing both land and boat, decide where the meal belongs before starting. Keeping food and water visible in the plan is more useful than adding another stop while everyone is already tired.

  4. After lunch · Keep the finish in Leshan

    Use genuine spare time for a local walk, then return towards the station with a buffer for the transfer and boarding. If boats are cancelled, the land route is a different visit, not a straight swap. Decide if it’s still worth it. Mount Emei needs a separate transport and mountain plan. Leaving it out is what lets this day include the site, lunch and the journey back comfortably.

What to budget

  • Giant Buddha land-route admission: RMB 80 — Published adult reference for the scenic area; the river boat and any connecting sightseeing vehicle are separate. Price source

Budget RMB 30–80 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.

A few photo tips

  • Use authorised viewpoints to include both the Buddha and cliff context; follow any one-way route and keep stairs moving.
  • If taking the boat, photograph from a stable permitted position and accept that river conditions and the operator control the angle.

If the weather changes

Choose the land visit only if routes remain safe and open; if river or path conditions are poor, use a Leshan town meal or return to Chengdu.

The final day and your flight

Morning flight: stay within reach of your Chengdu departure airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.

Afternoon flight: treat Leshan as a separate day trip and allow the full train or road connection before the airport; do not add Emei on the way. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.

Where to pause for food

Choose a Leshan noodle or local set meal and ask about spice and ingredients. A few snacks can supplement lunch without replacing it. Carry water for the potentially long queue and exposed sections around the monument.

Getting around

Reserve a suitable train and confirm the station-to-attraction transfer. A local driver can simplify the day, but check waiting time and the return pickup. The river boat is a sightseeing choice, not a substitute for reaching the city from Chengdu.

Where to stay

A Chengdu base can work for this dedicated day, with current rail and local transport checked as one sequence. Staying overnight in Leshan gives you more room to see the area or separate the two perspectives, but choose accommodation by the actual onward journey. If continuing to Emeishan, plan that transfer explicitly and keep luggage storage arranged. It is a change of destination, not a short extension of the temple grounds.

For a shorter day or different weather

With limited time, choose the land route or river view and lunch. Check stairs and boarding access before deciding which suits your group. An overnight lets you give the two perspectives separate windows and spend more time in the city.

Booking checks

Confirm current admission, route access, boat operation and return rail tickets. Expect crowds on peak dates and allow fewer activities accordingly. This is a dedicated Leshan day, providing more time than a combined Leshan-and-Emei checklist.
