Before you go
- Set up Alipay before departure: register your mobile number, add an eligible overseas card under Me → Bank Cards and follow identity-verification prompts. Keep access to SMS codes.
- WeChat Pay is the alternative: Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards. Foreign-card support depends on the issuer; check the final payment screen for fees, especially above RMB 200.
- Keep RMB cash in smaller notes and a second card. Most people pay by QR code. Foreign cards work at bigger hotels and shops, but rarely at food stalls. Ask before ordering if you need to pay by card.
- In metro cities, activate the local transport QR service separately from the shopping payment code, or buy a station ticket. For road journeys, use DiDi with the exact pickup point and destination saved.
- Save hotel and attraction names in Chinese, plus offline screenshots. A translation app helps with menus; ‘xièxie’ means thank you and ‘zhège’ means this one.
- Install a compatible China eSIM or arrange a local SIM before relying on data. Check coverage and whether the plan includes a local number; keep your home SIM available for verification messages.

A route for your visit
Times are rough. Allow extra time for getting there, leaving and transfers.
Day 1 · The panda base is the main outing
Reserve through the current authorised process and check the exact entrance and identification requirements. Allow several hours for the grounds, including the walk back out. It’s not a quick photo stop. Choose a manageable section and follow the viewing rules; animal visibility varies. If you arrive in Chengdu that day, move this outing to the next morning and keep arrival for settling in.

The Chengdu Panda Base is about animal care and research as much as visitors. Watching what the pandas get up to beats racing between enclosures. Pick one area and give it time. The pandas decide what happens.
Day 1 · Lunch and a lighter afternoon
Return towards the city with time for lunch and a rest. If it’s also your arrival day, move the pandas to the next morning. Travel plus a big outing is too much. A walk near the hotel can be enough. Have dinner in the same area. There’s no need to cross the city.

Allow around two hours for a walk and time at an open teahouse if you feel like sitting down. Leave the schedule loose here: you can stay longer over tea or head to lunch before the afternoon outing.
At People's Park, walk first and then stop for tea if an open teahouse appeals. Leave time to actually sit, not order while already planning your exit. Watch the ordinary activity around you and let this part of the day stay loose. It is a different experience from the panda base, and that contrast is precisely why I wouldn't compress both into one hurried morning.
People’s Park makes tea-drinking and everyday social life part of the city visit. Sit for a while. The teahouse isn’t just a photo.
Day 2 · One heritage area after the park
After People’s Park and lunch, choose Kuanzhai or the Wuhou and Jinli area. They offer different focuses, so let your interests decide and check any ticketed interior separately. With a train or flight later, stay near wherever your bags are. You won’t have time for both. With another night, give the second area its own afternoon.
Kuanzhai Alley brings restored courtyard streets into a busy contemporary visitor district. Enjoy the architecture and the food. Just know it’s a restored, touristy part of the city.
Wuhou Shrine connects Chengdu with the people and stories of the Three Kingdoms period. Read enough of the signs to know who’s who.
Jinli is a pedestrian street beside Wuhou Shrine, full of food and shops. Have a browse after the shrine.
What to budget

- Chengdu Panda Base admission: RMB 55 — Adult standard base admission; not the separate Panda Valley attraction, and not a transfer or guided-tour price. Price source
Budget RMB 30–80 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- At the Panda Base, shoot from the visitor areas with a longer lens and no flash. Earlier visits may catch more activity, but there are no guarantees.
- At People’s Park, ask before taking close portraits. Don’t point a camera at someone over their table.
If the weather changes
Use a museum or a longer sheltered tea stop and move the park stroll to a break in the rain; follow the Panda Base’s own operating notices.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: stay within reach of Tianfu or Shuangliu, as booked the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.
Afternoon flight: keep the final outing close to your hotel and confirm the airport early; Tianfu can require a substantially longer journey. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.
Booking checks
Reserve directly through the base’s current authorised process and check identification requirements. Follow viewing rules, keep voices low and don’t feed animals. Book museum or show tickets around actual opening days. Not everything runs every night.
