Your suggested route

The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.

  1. Day 1 morning · Settle into Airlie Beach

Arrive with enough time to find your accommodation and confirm tomorrow’s boat check-in point. Walk the Airlie Beach foreshore and marina area, allowing an hour for orientation rather than booking an immediate excursion after a flight.

  2. Day 1 afternoon · A relaxed mainland start

Have lunch in town, enjoy the waterfront and choose a lagoon visit if available. Use the afternoon to collect anything needed for the boat: sun protection, a secure water bottle and a light layer. Finish with an early dinner rather than a late night before an early departure.

  3. Day 2 · Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet

Book a tour that explicitly includes both Whitehaven Beach time and Hill Inlet lookout if the swirling-sand view is your priority. Different products visit different parts of the beach; do not assume a stop named Whitehaven includes the lookout. Follow the operator’s sequence because tides, weather and landing arrangements determine the day.

  4. Day 2 evening · Return and recover

Allow the entire excursion window, including check-in and return to town. Have a flexible dinner after the trip. Avoid a same-evening flight or tight road connection: a boat day deserves room for delays and time to shower before travelling onward.

Where to pause for food

Eat before boarding and check whether lunch, drinking water and dietary requirements are covered by the tour. Pack only what the operator permits. Airlie Beach is the convenient dinner base; you do not need to add an island resort restaurant to complete the experience.

Getting around

Plan airport transfers and boat transfers separately. Airlie Beach departure points, Shute Harbour and island-resort departures are not interchangeable. Stay near the pickup area if you want an easier morning. This is a two-day local plan, not two days including a rushed arrival and departure.

For a shorter day or different weather

Choose a reef-focused tour instead if snorkelling is your main goal; a reef day and a beach day are different products. In poor marine weather, keep a mainland day and rebook rather than treating any cancellation as a reason to find an unverified boat.

Before you go

Ask about the exact beach landing, Hill Inlet walk, snorkelling stops, inclusions and weather policy. Follow stinger and swimming guidance. A scenic flight is an optional separate experience, not a substitute that lets you stand on the beach.
