A day on Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island was an easy place to make a terrible attraction pun. I stand by the island; the joke is negotiable. For a day trip, I’d link Nelly Bay, the Forts Walk and Horseshoe Bay, with time for lunch by the water. Sort out island transport before you board the ferry. The next bay is often further than it looks.

Before you go
- Tap and go works almost everywhere. Keep a little cash for small stalls and watch for card surcharges.
- Public-transport ticketing differs by state. Check the local ticket system. One city’s travel card won’t always work in the next.
- Uber and taxis are easy in the cities. For national parks, small towns and early pickups, book both directions. Don’t count on finding a car out there.
- English is spoken everywhere. Download the day’s map and save the exact trailhead or meeting point, especially outside town.
- Get a local SIM or an eSIM and check coverage along your route. Having signal in town doesn’t mean you’ll have it in a gorge, on an island or on a mountain road.
- Save your last connection and accommodation address offline. On driving days, sort out fuel, food and the way back before you leave town.

A route for your visit

Orient yourself at Nelly Bay
On arrival, check the onward bus or booked transport before leaving the terminal area. Carry water and identify how you’ll reach the Forts trailhead and Horseshoe Bay afterwards. The first ferry crossing is only the start of the island journey, not delivery to every beach on the itinerary.
The Forts Walk combines Second World War fortifications with views over the island’s wooded hills and bays. Read the signs so the concrete ruins mean more than just a lookout.
Horseshoe Bay opens onto a broad sheltered-looking arc of coast, with village life close to the beach. Give lunch and the waterfront a decent chunk of the day.
Give the Forts Walk the cooler part of the day
Travel from Nelly Bay to the trailhead using the connection you checked before boarding the ferry. Allow two to three hours for the return walk and pauses around the wartime remains and coastal views. Carry water from the start. Koalas are a possible bonus, not a reason to leave the path or spend so long searching that lunch and the bus become a rush.
Nelly Bay is the island’s transport gateway, showing the practical harbour side behind a beach-day image. Use the arrival to get your bearings before heading inland.
Give the wartime remains and coastal views some time too. Searching for wildlife can swallow the walking allowance, and there’s no guarantee of seeing a koala.
Lunch · Horseshoe Bay
Continue to Horseshoe Bay for lunch and a proper rest. Spend the early afternoon by the water. Don’t jump straight into another hot walk. Choose a swim only if local conditions and advice make it appropriate.
At Horseshoe Bay, get lunch sorted before settling into the waterfront. Choose a café meal or takeaway at a suitable seating area, then give yourself a proper break. The broad bay is a good contrast to the hilltop views from the morning. If swimming is on your list, check the current marine and local safety advice for this bay. Sitting in the shade and watching the water is an equally good use of the afternoon.
One bay is enough before returning
After lunch at Horseshoe Bay, stay a while by the water unless another stop really fits the bus timetable. Work backwards from ferry check-in, including the journey back to Nelly Bay. A second bay adds more waiting and transport than its position on the map suggests. If you want several beaches and the walk, an overnight stay makes a better plan.

Budget AUD 20–40 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- Use the permitted Forts viewpoints in the cooler morning for layered hills and sea; keep any koala photography distant and quiet.
- At Horseshoe Bay, include the curve of the shore in softer afternoon light. Keep the ferry deadline in mind before waiting for another photograph.
If the weather changes
Choose a sheltered meal and a shorter waterfront stop if conditions allow; skip exposed trails and follow ferry advice if weather affects services.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: save this outing for another day and go straight from your overnight base to Townsville Airport. If you’re staying out of town and the transfer is tight, move closer the night before.
Afternoon flight: Return to the mainland early; do not make the last possible ferry your airport connection. Leave time for luggage collection, the complete journey to Townsville Airport and the airline’s check-in guidance; shorten the outing before reducing that buffer.

Check the Forts Walk alerts, ferry arrangements and seasonal marine advice. Keep wildlife at a distance and stay on signed paths. A beach being near a café doesn’t mean it’s patrolled.
