Your suggested route
The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.
Morning · Ferry to Nelly Bay
Take a morning ferry from Townsville and use Nelly Bay as your arrival point. Check the island bus or your booked transport before setting off; the bays are not all a short walk from the terminal. Start with water and a clear return-ferry plan.
Late morning · The Forts Walk
Travel to the Forts Walk trailhead and allow two to three hours for a comfortable return walk with stops. The combination of wartime remains, coastal views and dry tropical bush is the main activity. Koalas may be present, but sightings are not guaranteed and should not lead you off the track.
Lunch · Horseshoe Bay
Continue to Horseshoe Bay for lunch and a proper rest. Spend the early afternoon by the waterfront rather than immediately starting another hot walk. Choose a swim only if local conditions and advice make it appropriate.
Afternoon · One bay, then the ferry
If transport and time allow, add a short stop at another accessible bay on the way back. Otherwise remain at Horseshoe Bay and return directly to Nelly Bay. Leave a generous terminal buffer rather than trying to squeeze in a final photograph after the last useful bus.
