Ho Chi Minh City gave me a yellow museum to match my shirt, a pink church for a BLACKPINK joke and a very strong opinion that a rooftop pool beats a rooftop bar after a humid day. For a short visit, I’d keep it compact. One museum I really want to see and a proper meal after.

Before you go
- Carry Vietnamese đồng for street food, markets and small admissions. Many hotels and bigger restaurants take cards. Ask first, and check for surcharges.
- Check the zeros when paying and agree the price before accepting an unmetered ride. Keep smaller notes for short journeys.
- Grab can help in the larger cities. For countryside, boats and island transfers, confirm the exact pickup point and both directions with your accommodation or operator.
- Metro tickets, where relevant, are separate from intercity trains and buses. Book the actual station or pier, not only a city name.
- Save addresses in Vietnamese and download a translation pack. ‘Xin chào’ means hello and ‘cảm ơn’ means thank you.
- Use a registered local SIM or compatible eSIM; check whether calls or only data are included. Download the route before boat trips or rural outings.

Day 1 · Settle into the central base
Allow the airport journey and hotel check-in to take their time, then have a meal nearby. If there’s daylight left after you arrive, walk a small part of the centre. Don’t cross the city straight away. A late arrival simply means the neighbourhood walk moves to the following day.
First job: get to the hotel, drop bags and eat. If the room isn’t ready, ask to store your bags and find a café nearby. Don’t start a long outing carrying everything. For a late arrival, dinner close by is the whole plan. A central base makes it easier to use a few remaining daylight hours without committing to another substantial journey.
Day 1 evening · Nguyễn Huệ and dinner nearby
Once you’ve checked in, head towards Nguyễn Huệ if it fits your hotel location. Walk the central streets, stop for dinner and call it a night when you’re done. No need to cross town for more nightlife. If the flight arrives late, shift this walk to the following day and eat near the hotel. The short stay works better when the first evening can absorb a delay.
Nguyễn Huệ’s broad pedestrian space lets you see central Ho Chi Minh City at a slower pace than the surrounding traffic. Come back towards evening to watch the people as much as the buildings.
Day 2 · History or a lighter central walk
Choose the War Remnants Museum for a substantial history visit. The Fine Arts Museum is the alternative that connects with my yellow-building photograph; Tân Định Church is the pink exterior from another post. They’re three different outings. Pick one museum and only add the church if you still have plenty of time for the airport.
The War Remnants Museum presents the impact and memory of war through often confronting exhibits. Give it proper time and leave room after. Don’t pair it with a rushed photo stop.

Central Saigon’s older civic buildings sit beside a rapidly changing skyline, making different periods visible on one walk. Take in the whole street. It’s more than a row of façades.

Use the remaining time near your luggage pickup point and have the final meal before the airport transfer becomes urgent. Check your flight time. Not every departure is late at night. Add another night for multiple museums or an out-of-town excursion.
Have the final meal near the bags and confirm the airport ride before the afternoon gets away from you. Leave extra time for traffic. Don’t squeeze in one more district. If the flight is later, a café or a short central walk is easy to adjust. For two museums, the pink church and a lazy pool afternoon, add a night. Don’t cram it all into departure day.

Budget VND 50,000–150,000 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- Use Nguyễn Huệ around blue hour for a balance of building lights and sky, keeping a clear route for pedestrians.
- Photograph civic façades from public pavements in softer light; follow interior and museum camera restrictions.
If the weather changes
Use the museum or another open indoor collection as the main visit, with a seated lunch and short central walk.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: stay within reach of Tân Sơn Nhất Airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.
Afternoon flight: keep the last outing near your hotel and allow for city traffic. Don’t add anything far away. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.
Where to pause for food
Bánh Mì Huỳnh Hoa is the food stop for a short stay. A properly stuffed baguette beats a vague “local dinner”. Bến Thành Market is the browsing option, with prices agreed before ordering. If you’re staying near Nguyễn Huệ, spend the evening there and do the bakery during the day. No need to zigzag between all three.
Getting around
Fly in from Đà Nẵng, stay one night and continue to Sydney. Arrange luggage storage after checkout for the long departure day.
Where to stay
The short version means one central hotel night and decent time around arrival and departure. Check luggage storage before booking if checkout comes well before the flight. Keep it easy. A good meal and a short walk from the hotel. A rooftop pool can be a lovely extra if available to guests, but compare the room, location and access terms too; an old pool photo isn't a promise attached to every city stay. For a shorter day or different weather
For one night, keep the central walk and choose the Fine Arts Museum or War Remnants Museum. Tân Định adds a separate outing, so give it more time or another night. On departure day, keep lunch near the luggage pickup and work backwards from the airport journey.
