For central Vietnam, I’d base myself in Đà Nẵng and give Hoi An a full day. Then pick between Bà Nà Hills and Marble Mountains, depending on what kind of day you want. This is a planned route, with a coastal base, a slower old-town day and one main excursion before moving on to Ho Chi Minh City.

Before you go
- Carry Vietnamese đồng for street food, markets and small admissions. Many hotels and bigger restaurants take cards. Ask first, and check for surcharges.
- Check the zeros when paying and agree the price before accepting an unmetered ride. Keep smaller notes for short journeys.
- Grab can help in the larger cities. For countryside, boats and island transfers, confirm the exact pickup point and both directions with your accommodation or operator.
- Metro tickets, where relevant, are separate from intercity trains and buses. Book the actual station or pier, not only a city name.
- Save addresses in Vietnamese and download a translation pack. ‘Xin chào’ means hello and ‘cảm ơn’ means thank you.
- Use a registered local SIM or compatible eSIM; check whether calls or only data are included. Download the route before boat trips or rural outings.

Day 1 · Arrive and stay in Đà Nẵng
After the Bangkok flight, transfer to your base and eat nearby. Leave Hoi An for tomorrow. Don’t start another road trip straight from the airport. Confirm the return transport for that outing before going to sleep, with enough flexibility for dinner if wanted.
Hội An’s trading-port history remains visible in its shop houses, assembly halls and riverside streets. Pick one old house to go inside. It’s more than lantern photos.
After arriving from Bangkok, drop bags and choose a meal close to the accommodation. Use any daylight left for a short walk nearby and keep the rest loose. Before bed, settle tomorrow's Hoi An transport, including whether the driver or service can bring you back after dinner. A smooth first evening sets up the full day much better than adding another road journey immediately after the airport.
Day 2 · Hoi An, with time to stop walking
Give Hoi An a full day from Đà Nẵng. Tân Ký House makes a useful heritage interior, while the Japanese Covered Bridge anchors the walk through the old town. Stop for tea at Reaching Out before deciding whether to stay for the evening. Book the return transfer as part of the day. Hoi An isn’t a quick detour.

Day 3 · Pick the outing that suits the day
Give Bà Nà Hills the main part of the day if its attractions and mountain transport are the reason you’re going. Marble Mountains is a different option, with temple and cave areas and steps to consider; choose it when you want a smaller outing followed by time near the coast. Combining both was listed in the planner, but the recommendation here is to choose. Low cloud, rain or fatigue can make a local beach-and-café day the better use of the time.
Bà Nà Hills is a mountain resort and entertainment complex, with the Golden Bridge forming part of a much larger paid visit. Go for the experience. It’s not an untouched mountain village.
Đà Nẵng’s long urban coast gives the trip breathing room between sightseeing days. A simple beach walk and lunch are a fine plan on their own.
Day 3 evening · Back near the base
Keep dinner convenient after the excursion. Add a short beach or river walk if you’re up for it. Check the bridge event schedule before planning around it. Packing that evening makes the next morning less crowded.
Back in Đà Nẵng, choose dinner near the hotel and take a short beach or river walk only if it feels appealing. If the bridge event is the reason you’re going out, check the schedule directly. This is also the evening to pack and confirm the airport transfer. Keep the last night nice and easy. Don’t try to cram in everything you missed.
Day 4 · Breakfast and the airport
Leave the morning for checkout and the flight to Ho Chi Minh City on the recorded route. Don’t describe a midday departure as another full sightseeing day. If your own flight is later, add a nearby café or short walk, not a second Hoi An trip.
Have breakfast, complete checkout and leave according to the confirmed flight to Ho Chi Minh City. If there's spare time, choose somewhere close for a final coffee with the bags already organised. An afternoon flight isn’t an excuse for another long drive. You’ll enjoy the next city more if you arrive with some energy left.

Budget VND 50,000–150,000 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- In Hội An, early morning gives more space on the streets, while blue hour suits lanterns and water; keep shop entrances clear.
- At the Đà Nẵng coast, early light suits the east-facing sea, but stay on safe public beach areas.
- At Bà Nà, cloud changes quickly; use permitted viewpoints and enjoy details when the long view disappears.
If the weather changes
Pick a Đà Nẵng museum and a long lunch. In heavy rain, push back Bà Nà or the Hội An walk. You won’t get a clear mountain view anyway.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: stay within reach of Đà Nẵng Airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.
Afternoon flight: keep breakfast and perhaps a nearby coastal walk; leave Hội An and Bà Nà for days without a flight deadline. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.
