Lake Kawaguchiko & Fuji

I got up at 4.30 am for sunrise over Lake Kawaguchiko. That is a serious level of commitment from me before breakfast, but Fuji will do that.

Before you go
- Carry yen for small restaurants, temple admission and rural buses. Cards work in hotels and bigger shops. Keep enough cash for tomorrow’s smaller stops.
- Suica, PASMO and ICOCA work on most local transport, but not every rural bus, reserved train or sightseeing ticket. Use one card per traveller.
- Plan the exact station exit as well as the rail journey. For taxis, ask your accommodation or check the GO app’s coverage; remote pickups need arranging ahead.
- Save place names in Japanese and download an offline translation pack. ‘Sumimasen’ is useful for excuse me; ‘arigatō gozaimasu’ is thank you.
- An unlocked phone that supports eSIMs makes getting data easy. Check activation timing and coverage before purchase; many visitor plans are data-only.
- Keep the accommodation address and last return connection available offline. Download a map for countryside and mountain days, even with a SIM.

A route for your visit
Times are rough. Allow extra time for getting there, leaving and transfers.
Day 1 · Settle near the lake
Reach your accommodation or luggage storage before starting the sightseeing. Check how clear it actually is. Don’t just follow the order from an old photo. If Fuji is visible, favour the lakeshore first; if not, have lunch and leave room to revisit it later.
When you arrive, drop your bags and look at the sky before deciding what’s next. If Fuji is visible, go to a suitable lakeshore spot while the view is there and move lunch slightly later. If it isn't, eat first and settle in. Having a flexible first afternoon is more useful than a timetable that insists on the mountain appearing at the exact hour you've allocated to it.
Oishi Park and the north shore
Use Oishi Park for the lakeshore view of Fuji, then choose the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum if you want an indoor stop with a clear reason to visit: its kimono collection. Arakurayama Sengen Park is the separate Fujiyoshida outing for the following morning, not another lakeside viewpoint to reach on foot after lunch.
Kawaguchiko’s north shore sets the lake between you and Mount Fuji, which is why the view feels so open. Come for the layers of lake and mountain. Don’t count on a particular flower display.
The pagoda at Arakurayama Sengen Park gives the Fuji view a distinct foreground, but the mountain remains weather-dependent. Only add the climb if the view is clear and you still have the energy.
Fujiyoshida is a working town shaped by its relationship with Fuji, not just a street leading towards a photograph. Stay on the footpath with the camera and let locals get on with their day.
A separate morning for Fujiyoshida
Treat Arakurayama Sengen Park as an optional morning outing with transport, a stepped approach and the return included. Check current access and crowd arrangements first. If stairs don’t suit you, stay with the lake or an indoor visit. The pagoda viewpoint isn’t a quick stop beside a Kawaguchiko hotel, and another night increases your chances of a clear window without guaranteeing Fuji will appear.
Day 2 · Lunch before the onward journey
Eat in Fujiyoshida or return to your base, depending on where your luggage and departure connection are. If the climb is unsuitable, replace it with a shorter lakeside walk or indoor visit. Another night gives you a second morning to try for a clear view.
What to budget

- Sightseeing bus one / two-day pass: JPY 1,500–2,000 — Adult red, green and blue line pass; a single ride starts at 180 and may be better value for a short outing. Price source
Budget JPY 1,000–2,500 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- Try the north shore early, when the air and water may be calmer; leave room in the plan for Fuji to stay behind cloud.
- At Arakurayama, use designated viewing areas and follow queue rules; in Fujiyoshida, never stand in the road for the mountain alignment.
If the weather changes
Keep a lakeside café and an indoor museum visit if open; skip a viewpoint detour that depends on seeing Fuji.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: stay within reach of your Tokyo departure airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.
Afternoon flight: prioritise the full lake-to-airport journey; a brief breakfast near your accommodation is safer to schedule than another Fuji viewpoint. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.
If you're heading out for sunrise
Check the sunrise time for your dates and choose an accessible lakeside spot you can reach from your accommodation before public transport starts. Have shoes and a warm layer ready the night before; 4:30 am was early enough without having to search for everything.
Booking checks
Reserve intercity transport and accommodation for busy dates. Check viewpoint access and crowd-management notices. Check the forecast before choosing which morning to spend by the lake.
