Before you go
- Carry Vietnamese đồng for street food, markets and small admissions. Many hotels and bigger restaurants take cards. Ask first, and check for surcharges.
- Check the zeros when paying and agree the price before accepting an unmetered ride. Keep smaller notes for short journeys.
- Grab can help in the larger cities. For countryside, boats and island transfers, confirm the exact pickup point and both directions with your accommodation or operator.
- Metro tickets, where relevant, are separate from intercity trains and buses. Book the actual station or pier, not only a city name.
- Save addresses in Vietnamese and download a translation pack. ‘Xin chào’ means hello and ‘cảm ơn’ means thank you.
- Use a registered local SIM or compatible eSIM; check whether calls or only data are included. Download the route before boat trips or rural outings.

A route for your visit
Times are rough. Allow extra time for getting there, leaving and transfers.
Day 1 · Hoàn Kiếm and a small Old Quarter loop
From Hoàn Kiếm, make the Ancient House at 87 Mã Mây your interior stop, then continue through the surrounding Old Quarter streets. The narrow frontage makes more sense once you see how a traditional house extends inward. That is also the setting of my very sweaty holiday photo; a seated coffee break belongs immediately afterwards.
Hoàn Kiếm Lake is woven into Hanoi’s founding stories and everyday public life, with the streets changing character around its edge. Stop by the water for a bit before heading into the Old Quarter.
The Old Quarter’s closely packed trading streets make daily commerce part of the visit. Notice the shopfronts and street life, but remember people are working, not posing.

Have a seated lunch, then choose a museum, a café break or a booked water-puppet performance. A performance needs its own confirmed time; it should replace part of the afternoon, not compress dinner. Stay around the lake or accommodation area for the evening.
Water puppetry grew from village performance traditions in northern Vietnam, using water as its stage. Go for the unique art form. You don’t need to follow the language.
After lunch, make a conscious choice between another visit and a café. Egg coffee is the one I’d have again. Find somewhere to sit and enjoy it, out of the heat. If a water-puppet performance interests you, book a suitable time and plan the afternoon around it. Otherwise, a lake walk and dinner nearby are enough to give the first day a satisfying finish.
Day 2 · A cultural morning around the Temple of Literature
Set aside roughly ninety minutes for the Temple of Literature, then stop for lunch nearby. The Fine Arts Museum can extend this into a substantial cultural day if its opening arrangements and collections suit you. Otherwise, one visit is enough: return centrally for a café and a final walk. West Lake belongs in a separate free half-day, especially when you still need to collect bags and travel to the airport. Have lunch nearby, and only add the Fine Arts Museum if you really want another collection.
The Temple of Literature connects Hanoi with Confucian learning and the history of scholarly examinations. Read a little about it so the courtyards are more than a quiet photo stop.
West Lake opens the city out after the tighter Old Quarter streets. Add it for a change of pace, not just to tick off another lake.

Grab a taxi for West Lake if the afternoon is actually free. Otherwise finish with another central walk and coffee before collecting bags. Ninh Bình and the bay need their own travel days; neither is a sensible final stop before an evening airport transfer.

Budget VND 50,000–150,000 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- Walk the lake early for gentler light and more room, without photographing exercise groups closely without permission.
- In the Old Quarter, use a street corner or café viewpoint that does not obstruct traffic; overcast light suits façades.
If the weather changes
Give the chosen museum or booked puppet performance a longer window, then use short Old Quarter walks between rain showers.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: stay within reach of Nội Bài Airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.
Afternoon flight: keep a short lake walk or breakfast near your bags, allowing for the drive out of central Hanoi. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.
A coffee break belongs in the route
Leave a proper pause between the Old Quarter walk and the afternoon visit, especially in hot weather. Egg coffee is an option if it appeals; check ingredients if you have dietary restrictions. My old railway photograph isn't a suggestion to enter an active track—use open, permitted streets for the walk.
Where to pause for food
Egg coffee was the fragrant, delicious discovery in my Hanoi caption. Café Giảng is a specific place to try it now, although my old caption doesn’t identify the café I visited. Chè Bốn Mùa offers a different sweet stop, with Vietnamese dessert soups. Put either after the Old Quarter walk; neither needs an extra taxi journey across the city.
Getting around
Walk compact Old Quarter sections and use a booked car or taxi for longer distances. Allow extra time for traffic and the airport journey. Pick pickup points on wider streets. Cars can’t get down every narrow lane.
Where to stay
Look at staying near Hoàn Kiếm, or somewhere a bit quieter away from the busiest Old Quarter streets. Check the actual room location, vehicle access and airport pickup point as well as the map pin. For two days, staying in one place makes the route easier. If continuing to Ninh Bình or Cát Bà, confirm the pickup and final drop-off before deciding whether to collect bags early or leave them until after lunch. For a shorter day or different weather
With one day, keep Hoàn Kiếm Lake, the Old Quarter, one interior visit and an egg-coffee break. West Lake needs another half-day. Ninh Bình and a bay excursion need separate travel days, so take time from another leg if either is a priority.
Booking checks
Check museum closing days and performance tickets. Reserve onward transport separately from sightseeing time. This is a two-day city introduction; Ninh Bình and the bay require their own travel days.
