Chillin' like a villain was my Cát Bà caption. The water and limestone cliffs made a fairly convincing case for doing exactly that.

Before you go
- Carry Vietnamese đồng for street food, markets and small admissions. Many hotels and bigger restaurants take cards. Ask first, and check for surcharges.
- Check the zeros when paying and agree the price before accepting an unmetered ride. Keep smaller notes for short journeys.
- Grab can help in the larger cities. For countryside, boats and island transfers, confirm the exact pickup point and both directions with your accommodation or operator.
- Metro tickets, where relevant, are separate from intercity trains and buses. Book the actual station or pier, not only a city name.
- Save addresses in Vietnamese and download a translation pack. ‘Xin chào’ means hello and ‘cảm ơn’ means thank you.
- Use a registered local SIM or compatible eSIM; check whether calls or only data are included. Download the route before boat trips or rural outings.

A route for your visit
Three suggested calendar days include arrival, one full boat day and departure. The two-night stay provides a buffer after the excursion.
Day 1 · Get all the way to your island base
A booking to Hạ Long and a booking to Cát Bà can involve quite different final transfers. Check the island connection and hotel drop-off, then make lunch and a short waterfront walk the arrival plan. Confirm tomorrow’s actual pier and pickup point with the boat operator. If the journey runs late, those arrangements matter more than squeezing in a national-park walk.
Cát Bà’s forest adds a land-based view of an island often seen only from a boat. Pick an open route that suits the conditions and take time to look at the plants along the way.
Day 1 · Keep the land outing modest
Choose Hospital Cave for its wartime rooms, or Trung Trang Cave for limestone formations. Both give the land day a clearer purpose than ‘a nearby outing’, but they are separate from the Lan Hạ Bay boat day. Arrange the road transfer and confirm that the selected cave is open before leaving town; save the national-park walk for a morning with suitable footing.
The limestone islands and calm water of Lan Hạ Bay make the boat day. It’s not about any one photo stop. Spend some time on deck watching the layers of islands change.
If arrival is early, a nearby coastal walk can be enough for the first afternoon. A national-park outing should be chosen for a specific open route, with the return ride arranged and plenty of daylight. After a morning sitting in transport, don’t jump straight into a long trek. Save some time to shower, eat and get ready for the boat day, which is the main reason for this three-day outline.
Day 2 · Lan Hạ Bay at the operator’s pace
Take a properly equipped boat with an agreed route and passenger arrangement. Give the scenery time between stops. Kayaking is optional and the guide decides if conditions are okay. Stay in the area they show you. Don’t follow another group into an unfamiliar passage.
Ask the operator about group size, the actual pier, lunch and time at each stop. Pick a tour with some downtime to enjoy the bay between activities. If kayaking is included, listen to the briefing and decide whether it suits you that day. You can appreciate the cliffs from the boat as well. Keep the camera protected and don't make every quiet stretch another opportunity to check the phone.
Compare Lan Hạ Bay outings from Cát Bà by the island pickup and time in the bay. A mainland departure does not fit this overnight route without extra travel.
Day 2 · Back to the island for the evening
Allow for disembarkation and the journey from the pier to your accommodation, then have dinner nearby. Keeping this second island night means you can follow the boat programme without watching the clock for a mainland connection.
Back on the island, have dinner near the accommodation and enjoy not needing to leave immediately. That second night is doing useful work: it lets the boat trip finish at its own proper time. Sort out the next morning’s pickup while the operator is still around, then pack after dinner. A relaxed last evening is a much nicer end to the bay day than dragging wet belongings straight onto a mainland bus.
Day 3 · Back to the mainland
Have breakfast, collect your bags and use the booked island-to-mainland connection. Check the final drop-off as well as the ferry or bus departure: reaching the mainland is not the same as reaching Hanoi or an airport. The second island night keeps this journey separate from the bay trip.
What to budget

Budget VND 50,000–150,000 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- From a stable deck position, use overlapping limestone silhouettes in softer morning or late light.
- On a permitted coast or forest walk, include a little foreground for scale; do not cross barriers or approach cliff edges for an unobstructed frame.
If the weather changes
Stay ashore if marine services are suspended, and choose an indoor meal or town visit; a ferry cancellation also changes the departure plan.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: stay within reach of your chosen Hải Phòng or Hanoi airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.
Afternoon flight: leave a generous island-to-mainland margin, preferably with a mainland night before an important flight; do not book a bay excursion first. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.
Booking checks
Check boat licensing, passenger numbers, flotation equipment, inclusions and cancellation terms. Confirm local access after storms. You’ll probably need two nights to fit in an arrival afternoon and a full day on the bay.
