Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is where the city and sea end up in the same photograph: beach in front, a line of towers behind it. I’d spend a full day around Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, with a proper lunch in between. HOTA is an optional afternoon change of scene if an exhibition appeals. You don’t need to add a theme park to make the day feel complete.

Before you go

  • Tap and go works almost everywhere. Keep a little cash for small stalls and watch for card surcharges.
  • Check Translink for the bus, train or tram leg; park trailheads still need their own road transfer. The cheap local fare doesn’t cover Airtrain or private services.
  • Uber and taxis are easy in the cities. For national parks, small towns and early pickups, book both directions. Don’t count on finding a car out there.
  • English is spoken everywhere. Download the day’s map and save the exact trailhead or meeting point, especially outside town.
  • Get a local SIM or an eSIM and check coverage along your route. Having signal in town doesn’t mean you’ll have it in a gorge, on an island or on a mountain road.
  • Save your last connection and accommodation address offline. On driving days, sort out fuel, food and the way back before you leave town.

A route for your visit

Adjust the pace to suit you.

  1. See Surfers Paradise at ground level

    Surfers Paradise puts high-rise city life immediately behind an open ocean beach. Photograph the contrast from the promenade before deciding what to do next.

    Start with breakfast and the beachfront promenade. Give the beach and skyline some time before deciding on swimming or a paid viewpoint. This keeps the beginning flexible and avoids spending the whole morning moving between attractions before you have actually enjoyed the coast.

    Start around the beachfront end of Cavill Avenue and walk along the promenade before choosing a patch of sand. Looking back towards the towers gives you the city-and-beach frame in my photographs. Take a few photos while the morning is still cool, then sit down for breakfast. Don’t walk the whole beachfront on an empty stomach. Keep the first hour close to the centre so the next connection is straightforward.

    A photo from the beachfront can include both the buildings and their reflections in wet sand. You don’t need to go far into the water to get that contrast.

  2. Late morning · Beach or an indoor view

    Choose either a patrolled beach session or a booked observation-deck visit if clear weather makes it worthwhile. Keep this to one main activity. A grey day is not a reason to buy a view-based ticket you’ll not enjoy.

    If you want a view from above, SkyPoint is the specific observation-deck option to check, including visibility and current ticket arrangements. It adds a different perspective from another beach walk. If you’d rather stay outdoors, use a patrolled beach area and let that be the activity. Don’t treat swimming, the deck and a long promenade walk as three tiny stops; choosing one leaves more time to enjoy it.

  3. Broadbeach for lunch and a slower hour

    Use the tram or another suitable local connection to Broadbeach, then choose lunch around the central restaurant streets. Allow an hour for the meal and more for a short beachfront park walk. You’re changing the setting without travelling the full length of the coast. Stay around Broadbeach for the afternoon if you want more time by the coast. Surf Parade and the area towards Kurrawa give you a compact place to eat and return to the beach.

    Broadbeach offers a more meal-and-park-focused coastal pause south of Surfers. Take your time over lunch before the next lookout.

  4. HOTA or more coast

    HOTA is away from the beachfront, so plan how to get there. It’s not the next stop on the coastal walk. Choose a current exhibition or programme before going and allow time to look around properly. If nothing interests you there, stay in Broadbeach for a longer foreshore afternoon or return to Surfers. Burleigh would add another journey and another beach; save it for a different outing if you want time to enjoy it. Have dinner near where you’re staying. No more cross-town trips at the end of the day.

    HOTA adds art and performance to a destination often described only through its beaches. Pick a current exhibition to see a different side of the coast.

What to budget

Budget AUD 20–40 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.

A few photo tips

  • Use the promenade at early light for the beach-and-tower contrast; keep space around walkers and runners.
  • At Broadbeach, include a park or dune edge in the frame around late afternoon; for HOTA, follow exhibition photography rules.

If the weather changes

Use HOTA and a seated lunch as the main plan; leave a paid skyline viewpoint for a day with visibility.

The final day and your flight

Morning flight: save this outing for another day and go straight from your overnight base to Gold Coast Airport. If you’re staying out of town and the transfer is tight, move closer the night before.

Afternoon flight: Keep to a short breakfast walk near your base, then use the planned airport connection. Leave time for luggage collection, the complete journey to Gold Coast Airport and the airline’s check-in guidance; shorten the outing before reducing that buffer.

Where to pause for food

Breakfast around Surfers Paradise and lunch in Broadbeach keep the day moving in one direction. A café breakfast followed by a longer lunch works well if you want an early finish. For a beach-heavy day, choose takeaway and a suitable public seating area, but still leave time to rest out of the sun. Dinner can be a booked restaurant in Broadbeach or somewhere near your accommodation. The useful recommendation is to keep meals near your activities, not to cross the coast for every course.

Getting around

Use the tram where it serves your chosen coastal stops, with a separate connection for HOTA. Allow six to eight hours locally. Avoid hiring a car solely to move between closely connected central beach areas, and check the current network before planning farther south.

Where to stay

Surfers Paradise makes the first morning easy; Broadbeach suits the lunch-and-dinner end of this route. A hotel near the tram helps if you’re visiting both without a car. Check the actual walk from the building to the beach. A sea-view photo doesn’t tell you much. If you’re adding theme parks, the hinterland or another beach town, give those separate days. For a shorter day or different weather

HOTA is the useful indoor swap for a wet beach afternoon. A theme park or Springbrook needs a separate day. If an observation deck is the priority, use it in place of part of the beach morning and check visibility before paying.

Booking checks

Check attraction tickets and exhibition details directly. Beach conditions change, so follow patrol advice and swim between flags where available. Leave extra travel time during school holidays and major events.
