Your suggested route

The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.

  1. 10:00 · Chinese Garden of Friendship

Start at the Chinese Garden of Friendship and allow 60–90 minutes for the ponds, covered walkways and changing perspectives through the garden. Move slowly enough to notice how each doorway frames the next view. Admission is separate from the surrounding Darling Harbour public spaces.

  2. 11:30 · Darling Square

Walk towards Darling Square for a short look around the square and contemporary buildings. This is a useful transition between the quieter garden and busy Haymarket. Stop for a drink if you want one, but leave the main meal for Chinatown.

  3. 12:30 · Haymarket lunch

Explore Dixon Street and the adjoining streets, then choose a lunch spot for dumplings, roast meats or noodles. Read the menu before joining a queue and order a manageable amount; sharing two or three dishes is more enjoyable than treating the afternoon as an eating challenge.

  4. 14:00 · Dessert and a city stroll

Finish with matcha, tea or dessert. The Journal’s Chanoma tag is a starting point for checking the café’s current listing, not a guarantee that an old post gives its present address. If you prefer a walk, continue towards the Queen Victoria Building and use Town Hall for your return.

Where to pause for food

Make lunch the centre of this outing. Chinatown is useful for contrasting textures and flavours: a savoury meal followed by one sweet stop works well. Darling Square offers another choice if your preferred Haymarket restaurant is full. Keep dietary requirements explicit when ordering.

Getting around

Start around Darling Harbour or Town Hall and walk between the garden, Darling Square and Haymarket. Allow four to five hours including food. There is little reason to drive into this compact city route; choose a station based on where you finish.

For a shorter day or different weather

In heavy rain, shorten the garden and spend longer over lunch or in city shops. With limited time, choose the garden and one meal only. Friday-night or event crowds can change the atmosphere considerably, so treat market stalls as a possible bonus rather than a guaranteed activity.

Before you go

Check the garden’s opening hours and ticket arrangements. Confirm any specifically named café before travelling to it. A restaurant reservation is worth considering for a group, but a flexible lunch choice keeps this route easy.
