A route for your visit

Allow roughly two to three hours on site for a meal and a wander, plus your journey each way.

1. Start with the café on Huntley Street

   Choose The Grounds Café in Alexandria when booking; The Grounds also has venues elsewhere in Sydney. Leave around ninety minutes for breakfast or lunch, then keep the rest of the visit flexible. A reservation gives the outing an anchor, especially if you are coming across town.

   The Grounds occupies a former industrial setting transformed into cafés and planted courtyards. Leave time to take in the brick, the greenery and the changing displays.

   Check the venue name as well as the suburb when you book. The Alexandria location is on Huntley Street, and a reservation at another Grounds venue won’t put you in the gardens shown here. Choose breakfast if you want the rest of the day free, or lunch if this is your main outing. Leave a good gap after the meal. Don’t book something across the city straight after.

   For a casual visit, decide whether you want a seated café meal or takeaway before joining a queue. They lead to different kinds of mornings: the first gives you somewhere to settle in, while the second works for coffee and a shorter wander. Look at the menu that is actually available on your date. My Christmas visit doesn’t establish the current food, installation or access arrangements.

2. After the meal, follow the garden paths

   The garden displays change through the year, so it’s the whole courtyard that makes it, not one permanent piece. My older photo is a reason to look around, not a promise of the same display.

   Allow another half-hour to an hour for the areas open to visitors. My photo shows the red foliage around a garden seat; your visit may have a different display. Look at the planting and the smaller details between installations, and keep access clear for diners. Finish here if you have had enough: coffee and a short garden wander make a complete outing.

   

   The garden passages and displays are the reason to leave time beyond the meal. Walk through once before choosing a photo spot; it’s easier to see where people are moving and where you can stop without blocking a doorway. Get some of the plants or the courtyard in the frame. A photograph of a single decorative object doesn’t tell you much about being here.

   For a seasonal installation, check whether any part needs its own reservation or has limited access before making a special trip. Once you’ve seen the gardens, have another drink if you feel like it or finish the outing. You don’t need to turn a café visit into an all-day itinerary. If you do want a longer day, Sydney Park is a separate optional walk to plan afterwards, not another part of The Grounds.
