Pha Chor

Getting to Pha Chor was a trek, but my verdict at the time was that it was absolutely worth it. Those ochre walls and deep grooves feel very different from the green waterfall and mountain stops elsewhere in northern Thailand. I’d come for one focused walk, take time looking at the rock formations and have lunch sorted before the drive back. It doesn't need another major activity attached to it.

Before you go
- Carry baht in smaller notes for markets, temples and local transport. Cards work best at hotels and bigger businesses. Watch for surcharges.
- A Thai QR sign doesn’t mean your foreign banking app can pay. Keep some cash unless your own wallet app confirms it works.
- Bangkok’s rail operators have separate ticketing arrangements. Outside the capital there’s usually no metro, so sort out local transport ahead.
- Grab works in the cities. Islands, parks and rural pickups usually need a driver booked ahead. Confirm the return journey and waiting time.
- Save addresses in Thai and use an offline translation app. ‘Sawasdee khrap’ is a polite hello for a male speaker; ‘khop khun khrap’ is thank you.
- Buy a registered local SIM or compatible eSIM with the coverage you need. Have your passport available for registration and keep a screenshot of the accommodation address.

A route for your visit
Times are rough. Allow extra time for getting there, leaving and transfers.
Confirm the Mae Wang entrance
Give the driver the exact Pha Chor location, not just the wider Mae Wang park. Agree where they’ll wait and the trip back before leaving Chiang Mai. Have breakfast before pickup and bring water and a snack, even if lunch is planned. The simplest version is a return outing with the transport arranged throughout. Relying on finding an onward ride at the end would make the walk less relaxing.
Pha Chor’s eroded sediment formations reveal layers and shapes left by water and weathering. Look along the walls as well as up. The small textures are half the fun.
Follow the trail through the formations
Check the open route with staff, then allow roughly ninety minutes to two hours for walking and pauses. Look at how the formations change from one permitted viewpoint to the next. Steps, heat and footing are more useful planning measures than a short quoted distance. Stay off the fragile surfaces and don’t climb a formation to improve the camera angle.
Lunch before deciding on any extension
Eat at the agreed local stop or a permitted rest area, with water already packed. If the walk has filled the useful part of the day, begin the return to Chiang Mai. Another short stop should be convenient to that road route and confirmed accessible. Adding an unrelated adventure activity would turn a focused outing into a longer transport day.
Back to Chiang Mai
Return by the agreed road route, leaving any final stop dependent on the time and conditions. Keep dinner near your city base. If park staff close the walking route after rain, switch to a city day.
Keep dinner near the city accommodation and leave time to shower and change first. Pha Chor is dusty and exposed, so don’t plan anything fancy for the evening straight after. If you get back early, use the spare time for a café or a relaxed browse. That is a much nicer bonus than having another activity waiting for you before you've even sat down.

Budget THB 80–250 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- Use the marked path to photograph the changing height and texture of the formations; an early start can avoid the harshest heat.
- Include a little of the path for scale without asking someone to climb the fragile walls.
If the weather changes
Skip the walk during heavy rain, closures or slippery conditions and keep the day in Chiang Mai; a second exposed canyon is not a useful backup.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: stay within reach of Chiang Mai Airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.
Afternoon flight: keep the Pha Chor drive and walk off the flight day unless the complete return leaves a very comfortable margin. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.

Confirm current park access and trail conditions directly or through your operator. Published trail distances vary with the route and start point, so allow a generous walking budget. Stay behind barriers and avoid touching or climbing the eroded formations.
