Madarao mountain break

Those Japanese Alps, though. That was basically my reaction at Madarao, and looking at the mountains again I can see why. I’d plan a stay here around the snow, not a long list of nearby places. Get settled, have two good ski days and eat close to where you’re staying. The view can do some of the entertaining.

Before you go
- Carry yen for small restaurants, temple admission and rural buses. Cards work in hotels and bigger shops. Keep enough cash for tomorrow’s smaller stops.
- Suica, PASMO and ICOCA work on most local transport, but not every rural bus, reserved train or sightseeing ticket. Use one card per traveller.
- Plan the exact station exit as well as the rail journey. For taxis, ask your accommodation or check the GO app’s coverage; remote pickups need arranging ahead.
- Save place names in Japanese and download an offline translation pack. ‘Sumimasen’ is useful for excuse me; ‘arigatō gozaimasu’ is thank you.
- An unlocked phone that supports eSIMs makes getting data easy. Check activation timing and coverage before purchase; many visitor plans are data-only.
- Keep the accommodation address and last return connection available offline. Download a map for countryside and mountain days, even with a SIM.

A route for your visit
Plan for two ski days, plus the transfer and equipment setup. If you arrive during the first morning, treat it as a shorter session and keep the second day free for the slopes.
Day 1 · Find the base before the lift
The quieter base area makes the rhythm of the stay quite different from a large city resort. Use the evening to rest and enjoy dinner. Skip the long drive.
Use the accommodation’s transfer instructions and confirm where to collect equipment. Check the current map, weather and operating lifts before buying into an ambitious circuit. Leave time for boot adjustments; a rushed first lift can make the rest of a short stay unnecessarily difficult.
Fit the train journey around the actual Iiyama bus connection, then check the last stretch to the property. Save the pickup instructions and tell your accommodation what time you’ll arrive. Once there, find the rental and lesson locations before thinking about a first lift. If the journey fills most of the day, use the remaining time to get ready and start properly the following morning.
Start with terrain that feels comfortable
Use appropriate marked runs or instruction and give yourself time to adjust to the snow and equipment. Take lunch before deciding how much afternoon to ski. Tree areas and ungroomed terrain are not automatic next steps; follow the current resort rules and your ability. The first day’s aim is to enjoy skiing and have enough energy to do it again.
An evening near your accommodation
Return your equipment if required, change and have dinner near where you're staying. Confirm the next day's pickup and rental return while the relevant desks are open. Leave the rest of the evening free.
Keep dinner close and confirmed. Small mountain places can be wonderful, but don’t expect lots of late walk-in options outside the door. Ask about meals when booking and mention dietary needs then. After dinner, check the following day's weather and transfer plan, put damp things where they can dry and leave the rest of the evening free. Your legs will probably have their own plans anyway.
Madarao is all about the mountain and the snow, not sightseeing off the slopes. Keep the ski day simple and stick to open runs that suit your level.
A second session with the bus in mind
Check the actual return connection before heading up. Allow for getting down the mountain, rentals, luggage and reaching the pickup point. Familiar terrain or a lesson can fill the morning well without an ambitious final circuit. If you want a longer mountain day, another night buys that time more reliably than trying to catch the last possible transfer.
What to budget

- Afternoon / full-day ski options: JPY 4,400–9,000 — 4,400 is the three-hour afternoon Madarao option; 9,000 is the one-day Madarao–Tangram common ticket. Hire and lessons are extra; verify the season and validity before paying. Price source
Budget JPY 1,000–2,500 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- Use a safe open piste edge for mountain layers in morning light; stop only where approaching skiers can see you.
- Snow can fool the camera into a grey exposure, so check a test frame; do not enter closed or off-piste terrain for a photograph.
If the weather changes
Use the accommodation and village facilities for a rest day if lifts close; confirm transport before changing resorts in winter weather.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: stay within reach of your onward Tokyo airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.
Afternoon flight: allow the local transfer to Iiyama, rail journey and airport leg as separate parts of departure; leave the final morning free of skiing. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.
Check dinner as well as the lifts
If your accommodation is away from the main resort area, ask whether it serves dinner and whether nearby restaurants need reservations. Sort out the station transfer at the same time; a local resort shuttle and a connection to Iiyama aren't necessarily the same service.
Booking checks
Confirm winter dates, rental, lessons and transfers directly. Buy additional connected-area coverage only if relevant to your ability and plans. Stay within open resort terrain and follow the marked boundaries.
