Your suggested route

The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.

  1. Morning · Paraparaumu Beach

Start with breakfast near Paraparaumu Beach and a slow foreshore walk. Allow an hour to enjoy the view towards Kāpiti Island and the wide coastal setting. The island view is part of this mainland itinerary; landing on the island requires a separate authorised visit.

  2. Late morning · Choose your coastal pace

Continue with a manageable beachside section or browse the village. Keep the distance modest if the wind is strong. This is a good destination for a slower day rather than a long list of attractions.

  3. Lunch · Village stop

Have lunch in Paraparaumu Beach or carry a picnic to a permitted area. Leave time to sit and enjoy the coast before moving to a second location.

  4. Afternoon · Queen Elizabeth Park

Travel to Queen Elizabeth Park and choose an open walking or cycling section through the coastal landscape. Allow 60–90 minutes rather than committing to the full trail network. Finish with a café stop in the area or head back to Wellington before the evening feels rushed.

Where to pause for food

A beach-village breakfast and lunch make the day easy. If picnicking in the park, carry water and take all rubbish back with you. Check smaller cafés’ opening hours if your visit falls on a quiet weekday.

Getting around

A car is convenient for connecting the beach village and park. Rail to Paraparaumu needs a further local connection to the beach; the station is not on the sand. Allow a full day from Wellington, including both transfers.

For a shorter day or different weather

For a half day, keep Paraparaumu Beach and lunch. In strong wind, choose sheltered town activities rather than an exposed long walk. Kāpiti Island should replace the mainland itinerary for the day, with its own permits, operator and weather contingency.

Before you go

Check park access and any cycle-hire arrangements. Do not assume a historical tram or other seasonal activity operates daily. Use current authorised visitor information before planning any island landing.
