Guangzhou is my parents' hometown, so it has a different connection for me from most places in the journal. Looking back at the tower photo, I was already noticing how much had changed between visits.

Before you go
- Set up Alipay before departure: register your mobile number, add an eligible overseas card under Me → Bank Cards and follow identity-verification prompts. Keep access to SMS codes.
- WeChat Pay is the alternative: Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards. Foreign-card support depends on the issuer; check the final payment screen for fees, especially above RMB 200.
- Keep RMB cash in smaller notes and a second card. Most people pay by QR code. Foreign cards work at bigger hotels and shops, but rarely at food stalls. Ask before ordering if you need to pay by card.
- In metro cities, activate the local transport QR service separately from the shopping payment code, or buy a station ticket. For road journeys, use DiDi with the exact pickup point and destination saved.
- Save hotel and attraction names in Chinese, plus offline screenshots. A translation app helps with menus; ‘xièxie’ means thank you and ‘zhège’ means this one.
- Install a compatible China eSIM or arrange a local SIM before relying on data. Check coverage and whether the plan includes a local number; keep your home SIM available for verification messages.

Arrival · The final city transfer still counts
Check where the booked cross-border train or bus finishes and how you will reach your accommodation from there. Border formalities, luggage and that last transfer all belong in the arrival day. Keep the evening for a nearby meal and a short walk if there is time. A timed attraction straight after the journey adds pressure without making the overnight stay more useful.
Evening · Eat near the hotel
Choose an operating meal option in the surrounding area and take a short walk if there is time. This makes the arrival night useful without depending on another long transfer. Pack or organise the airport journey before leaving the next morning entirely open.
This is the night for a Cantonese meal, not a cross-city sightseeing mission. Choose a place with a clear menu, order a manageable amount and leave time to sit. If travelling with family, that time together may matter more than another landmark. Afterwards, take a short local walk if you feel like it, then organise the next day's luggage and airport plan before going to bed.
Final morning · One cultural visit or the river
Choose the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall for carved and decorated architectural detail, or Shamian for a walk among the old concession-era buildings. Canton Tower is a different outing on the river farther east. With one night before flying home, pick one of these areas and a Cantonese meal. Don’t taxi between all three.

The Pearl River places Guangzhou’s trading history and modern growth along the same waterway. A short riverside walk is enough. You don’t need a cruise.

Work backwards from the airline's airport guidance and the transport you're using, including luggage collection. Keep the final meal convenient to that route. End the city visit early enough to absorb delays on the way out.

If you want more Guangzhou, add a night at the start of this leg. Don’t take it from the flight home.

Budget RMB 30–80 per person for a simple meal. That’s a rough guide. Drinks and nicer restaurants cost more. Price transfers separately, especially private drivers, boats and airport trips.
A few photo tips
- At the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, use permitted courtyard positions and a closer frame for decorative details.
- Along the Pearl River, blue hour can balance the city lights with the water; stay on public promenades and avoid blocking busy paths.
If the weather changes
Head to an open museum or the covered parts of the hall, then have dinner near your base. Skip the longer river walk.
The final day and your flight
Morning flight: stay within reach of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport the night before, then keep the morning for checkout and the transfer. Allow for the airline’s check-in time as well as the trip.
Afternoon flight: keep the morning local and allow time for the full airport transfer. If you’re catching a train, check the exact station. They don’t all leave from the same one. Work out the transfer and bag pickup time before deciding when to finish.
